Another singer is Doris Ang, and according to some enthusiasts, is popular in the late 60s. She is backed by a group called The Sandboys and recorded the EP titled, Crying In A Storm (1966). It has been pressed by Japanese singer, Emy Jackson and The Smashmen (1965) and one of the oldest J-Pop. The Quests too have accompanied Rita Chao.

The selection on this EP includes, Me The Peaceful Heart, a fast beat Lulu favourite, Simon Says by 1910 Fruit Gum Company (a late 60s bubblegum sing-a-long) and How To Catch A Boy. The recordings are in Chinese on vinyl ST 1007.

The recording of the song, in comparison to other better known vinyl recording companies is amateurish but worth listening to. It goes to show the enthusiasm of youth and the music scene in the 60s. These bands recorded not for the economic gains but for the fun and satisfaction it brought them when pop music was just surfacing then.

I must thank Richard Rajoo, guitar enthusiast and a popular jamming kaki with other local musicians, for providing me the names of the band members above.

Hi Andy, yes I remember Sherman and The Sandboys. They were guest band at a dance nite way back in the mid 60s. That event was organized by the SGTSU (Singapore Government Technical Services Union) and the venue was at the Victoria Memorial Hall. They sure stole the limelight as they had a singer whereas The Decibels didn't. All tickets for the dance nite were sold out well before hand. I can't recollect any of the songs Sherman sang nor the tunes the Sandboys played that night but the party guests sure had a great time. Rip Sherman 🙏

OK... Here's a little on Sherman... He was a *QC* WITH the then *JURONG SHIPBUILDERS'* pre *Jurong Shipyard* days.. He went on the *M.V.LOGOS* a donated by its owners. They converted the rusty old vessel, *(slated for the Scrape-Yard) laden with books, to help the poor children of India to start an interest in reading & books.. *all ran on donations from the Vessel *M. V. Logos& ran by volunteers & KIND SOULS* Probably, sailed for a year or so, stopping at many Indian Ports, wherever the Port Authority permits.. To do distribution of Scriptures & Reading Materials to the Local Slums & Homeless🙏🏻Heard that, they depended on the *Captains & Pursers of any Ships or Vessels, they were berth along-side for excess *frozen food, meat supplies* they are kindly donated to the cause of the *M. Hi Andy,

Doris Ang is the sister of Alan Ang who was with “The Sand Boys”. In the 1970s he joined “The Establishment” which included Benson Francis (Stephen Francis’ brother), Sunny, Johnny and Raymond. Alan is now with “Locomotion”, band.

Alan is my childhood friend who taught me how to play the guitar in my school days. He was a frequent visitor to my Margaret Drive home and got to know my mum, sister Irene and brother Sonny well.

Alan is known for his friendliness and generosity. When he was based in Taipei performing with the band called “The Does”, he gave my mum and Sonny’s family a warm welcome and unforgettable hospitality when they visited the city.

Cheers
