HOME
Whenever I am feeling low
I look around me and I know
There's a place that will stay within me
Wherever I may choose to go
I will always recall the city
Know every street and shore
Sail down the river which brings us life
Winding through my Singapore

Chorus:
Kit Chan

This is home truly
Where I know I must be
Where my dreams wait for me
Where that river always flows

This is home surely
As my senses tell me
This is where I won't be alone
For this is where I know it's home

When there are troubles to go through
We'll find a way to start anew
There is comfort in the knowledge
That home's about its people too

So we'll build our dreams together
Just like we've done before
Just like the river which brings us life
There'll always be Singapore

Repeat Chorus:

For this is where I know it's home
For this is where I know I'm home...

Home (家), sung by Kit Chan, was composed by Dick Lee in 1998 as the first in a series of yearly songs commissioned for Singapore's National Day Parade, together with the other NDP song that year titled as City For The world. It has English and Chinese versions, both sung by Kit. In 2004, it was remixed for three child soloists, one of whom was young actress and singer Shanice Elizabeth Nathan. The children were accompanied by a girls' choir and the piece was reused as the National Day song for 2004 to elect Mr Lee Hsien Loong as the 3rd Prime Minister of Singapore. In 2010, Kit performed the song at the 2010 National Day Parade.

Chan is the third daughter in a family of four sisters.

Kit Chan studied in Fairfield Methodist School (Primary), Raffles Girls' School, Raffles Junior College and Lasalle-SIA College of the Arts.

During Chan's six-year hiatus from the music scene from 2004 to 2010, she returned to LaSalle as a mature student. She wrote a thesis on the psychology of performance and graduated with first-class honors.

Chan was the first solo artiste to perform the National Day Parade theme song “Home” (家) in 1998. It later become the tradition for pop artistes doing so each year.

Singaporeans born between 1970-1989 got the BEST childhood memories ever! I remember visiting my grandparents in kampong weekly and enjoyed many simple, beautiful things that made my dozen of uncles, aunties and cousins laughed.
Singapore.... may you continue to stay simple and beautiful, happy birthday.

There are some good NDP songs particularly those from 2000-2006, but this stands out. Somehow when I was young and in Primary School, I never liked this song because of how dull it sounds at the beginning. However as I grew older, mind you I'm still only 18, this became my favourite of all NDP songs. There is something very "homely" about this song that it touches your heart even just listening to the opening, before you even sing the first verse.
